cha-cha-cha-changes!

big news: 2 1/2 weeks ago we told lucy to grow up:
her crib is now her big girl bed. she was surprisingly good about staying in it the first night.
she soon came to her senses and now darts in and out, grabbing books and toys to add to her little hoard.
potty training is going okay. she has had a couple of accidents recently (the most notable happening at the gym while i was in yoga. she peed on the floor and hazel proceeded to slip on it) and waits until she's in a pull-up or diaper to do her #2. still, we've made progress.

memorial day weekend was pretty calm around here. hazel talked me into buying her and lucy some flags:
they were pretty excited to show some patriotism:
that saturday we headed out for a run. too late in the morning, of course (but really any time of day is the wrong time to run around here). grant managed 3 miles. i was planning on 7 and ended up with 4 1/2-ish. too hot. we rendezvoused at the arboretum where hazel made friends with an armadillo puppet:
she's saying, "hi! i'm an armadillo" in a reallly high-pitched voice.
apparently it was pretty hot in the stroller, both girls had sweaty little heads:
we played around in the air conditioned building for a while:

before we walked back to the car in the blazing hot sun:
memorial day turned out to be a flop. we had two birthday parties to go to but i woke up with the cold that the girls' were getting over. so grant took them down to brazos bend while i slept. no pictures. sorry. a few days later, grant and i went for a night run along the bayou by us. we watched bats as they swooped all around us eating bugs. at the halfway point, i had to stop so we let the girls out of the stroller to get rid of their wiggles. they ran along have lots of fun and then BAM! hazel face-planted on the asphalt trail. we could see she'd scraped up her knee, but she seemed to be crying much harder than the situation warranted. so we told her to toughen up. then we noticed the blood on her chin. she had scraped up her chin and bit her lips, and said she hit her teeth on the ground. we hurried home. sure enough the gums above one of her top front teeth was bleeding. her tooth wasn't loose, thank goodness, and it seems to be fine (it hasn't discolored at all and it's been over a week). we cleaned up her knee and gave her a cold washcloth to hold on her lips:
here she is the next day:
it looked worse in person. (the scratch on her nose was from lucy. they've been playing so nicely with each other lately... )

on tuesday, we lured oliver into his "cage" with some treats and then freaked him out by putting him in the car and droving him to the vet (he curled himself up and hid under the pillow, i wish i'd had my camera). after he had some work done *ahem*, we brought him home:
he was so hopped up on drugs, he could barely walk. it was the saddest thing i've ever seen. by the next morning he seemed more himself:
he's back to normal, perhaps a tad mellower, but still our sweet little guy.

on thursday, hazel and lucy demanded to share my style:
and finally, yesterday we  hit the zoo for the last time before we head for utah next week. we waited in the car for grant to walk over from campus (if you look close you can see him by the flag pole):
we envied the sea lions as they swam:
and gazed longingly at the fountains:
then hazel demanded to take some pictures. and she did good:
since it's not often that i post a picture of myself and even less often that my hair is out of a ponytail, i thought i'd point out my new hair do. i had it cut and colored this week and i really, really like it.
after pictures, we headed indoors. to the reptiles of course:
this guy cracked me up. he looks so put out.
grant admired the many types of rattlesnakes:
and i found these baby tree pythons to be kind of cute:
so leetle!
 lucy communed with the lizards:
back in the hot, hot sun, we watched a cat fight unfold:
and then we finished our trip with the fish tunnel:
the end.

p.s. it's possible that this will be the last post until august. i doubt i'll post before we leave and i'm not sure if i'll have the chance to while we're in utah. so have a cool summer y'all!

Your camera card will fit into one of the slots on my iMAC. ;^) Or bring your USB cord for my MacBook Pro. Or bring your laptop and mumble a lot using Qwest speed instead of Comcast speed....
